TF, HAPPY NEW YEARS TO ME - I get CANCER!
Yes, you read that right. I have cancer.
That horrible "C" word.
Happy fucking 2008 girlfriend.
A few weeks ago, I went to see a dermatologist because I thought I had excema or dermatitis. While I was there, I had him check a spot on my back that had been there for a few years. He did a biopsy. He said if everything was OK I'd get a card in the mail after the 1st of the year. I didn't get a card, I got a phone call. I knew it was gonna be bad. The nurse told me over the phone (which I thought was kind of strange), that the biopsy came back as positive for BASAL CELL Carcinoma - skin cancer. I was speechless. She said that if you have to have a cancer, this is the best kind..Is there a best kind? Not in my mind, not at that moment, there wasn't. I started crying, but tried to hold it together while I was talking to her. She said she'd send some information in the mail to me, and we made an appt for February for the consult. She said they would cut it out. ICK.
I hung up, and started bawling at my desk. Thankfully my wonderful friends work right next to me, and were there to make me feel a little bit better. (Darn it, I'm gonna cry again!).
Cancer. Cancer. I have cancer. WTF.
That was found on a whim. What if I have it elsewhere? I am going to call the doctor back and tell them that at my next appt, I want checked from head to toe.
What was determined to be cancer wasn't even a mole, so don't think you can't get a cancer diagnosis from something else on your skin. Google "basal cell carcinoma" and look at the pictures. Yeah, they're not appetizing - but you should know what it looks like. Mine was just a little dry patch of skin - that itched from time to time. It's about the size of a dime. Unassuming - just bright pink, and pretty round in shape.
Its not always easy to get an appt with a dermatologist. The odd thing is, I tried a little over a year ago..and was told there was a 6 month wait. I called doctors in my county, and a neighboring one. I let it go. Then when mom and I went on vacation in July, she noticed the spot and said "I wish you'd get that checked out" - I let it go again, until December. I opted to try for a doc in "the big city" - he got me in within 2 weeks. It may have saved my life. Guess that remains to be seen.
I have more I could talk ab out, but that will wait til I feel like posting again.
Sorry for the new year downer!
